Indonesia has established a series of ambitious goals for advancing renewable energy as part of its dedication to sustainability and reducing carbon emissions, according to Indonesian news agency ANTARA.
These goals are outlined in various documents and policies, including the National Energy General Plan (RUEN) and the Electricity Supply General Plan (RUPTL).
The RUEN sets Indonesia’s objective to elevate the share of renewable energy in its overall energy mix to 23 percent by 2025 and to 31 percent by 2050. This target encompasses a range of renewable sources, such as solar, wind, bioenergy, hydropower, and geothermal energy.
Global commitment to emission reduction
Additionally, the RUPTL sets specific targets for renewable energy capacity development over designated timeframes. For instance, the 2021–2030 RUPTL emphasizes substantial growth in renewable energy capacity, focusing on solar power, wind energy, and bioenergy initiatives.
By enhancing its renewable energy usage, Indonesia is also fulfilling its commitment to global efforts to lower greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) outlined in the Paris Agreement.
Accelerating energy transition
The country is actively working to accelerate its energy transition and reduce carbon emissions through various policies that promote renewable energy development. These include fiscal incentives, financing support, and regulations designed to attract investments.
Moreover, Indonesia is enforcing mandatory policies that require the integration of renewable energy within the electricity and fuel sectors, such as the requirement to blend biofuels with fossil fuels.
