Google has announced new features that will use artificial intelligence to protect users’ data in case an Android smartphone is stolen. These features will first be tested in Brazil, where about two mobile phones are stolen every minute.
Fabio Coelho, Google’s Brazil country director, stated that the new anti-theft system was inspired by feedback from Brazilian users. Starting in July 2024, Brazilian Android users with compatible devices will be able to access a beta version of these features.

Three-tiered security approach
The new security measures include:
- Theft detection lock: This uses AI to detect movements commonly associated with theft and quickly locks the phone’s screen to prevent thieves from accessing the data.
- Remote lock: Allows users to access the “Find My Device” feature without needing to remember their Google account password, enabling them to remotely wipe and lock their stolen device.
- Offline device lock: Automatically locks the device’s screen to protect data even when the phone is offline, and also locks the screen after multiple failed authentication attempts.
Expanded fraud protection in Brazil
In addition, Google is also expanding its Play Protect fraud protection features in Brazil starting in July. This aims to keep users safe when installing apps from sources other than the Google Play Store, such as web browsers and messaging apps.
These new anti-theft and security measures are further a direct response to Brazil’s ongoing phone theft crisis. In 2022, the country saw a 16.6 percent increase in mobile phone thefts. The Brazilian government has also launched the Celular Seguro app to help users report and block stolen phones.
