The world’s most powerful floating offshore wind turbine, with a generating capacity of 20 megawatts, has been developed in Yancheng, Jiangsu Province, eastern China, according to train manufacturer CRRC Corporation Limited.

This turbine, engineered independently by China, features a wind wheel with a diameter of 260 meters and a sweeping area of 53,100 square meters, roughly equivalent to seven standard soccer fields.

It has the capacity to produce 62 million kWh of electricity annually, enough to power about 37,000 homes. This innovation also aids in conserving 25,000 tons of coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 62,000 tons.

With a semi-submersible floating platform and a sophisticated mooring system, the turbine employs smart control and sensing technologies to extend the harnessing of wind energy into deeper waters, ensuring dependable performance.

Wang Dian, deputy general manager of CRRC Qi Hang New Energy Technology Co., Ltd, remarked that floating offshore wind turbines represent a significant technological advancement that is expected to shape the future of wind energy development, as reported by Xinhua News Agency.

The turbine is designed with customizable features to accommodate various water depths, offering optimized solutions for capturing deep-sea wind energy.

Moreover, China’s renewable energy sector is progressing rapidly, driven by government initiatives aimed at increasing the proportion of non-fossil fuel electricity in its energy portfolio. In 2023, for the first time, the country’s renewable energy capacity surpassed that of thermal power, accounting for over half of the total installed power generation capacity.
