Amazon’s cloud computing arm, Amazon Web Services (AWS), will invest 10.1 billion reais ($1.8 billion) in Brazil by 2034 to expand its data center operations in the country. The company will use the resources to expand, build, connect, operate and maintain data centers in Brazil. AWS’s previous investment plans in Brazil reached a total of 19.2 billion reais from 2011 to 2023.

AWS has a cloud region in São Paulo and three availability zones which launched in 2011. In addition, it has edge locations in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Fortaleza. In 2020, Amazon’s cloud computing arm announced that it plans to invest $240 million into Brazil’s cloud infrastructure over the next two years.

This week, the company also committed to investing $10.47 billion in its data center operations in the U.K. over the next five years.

Brazil market thrives

The data center market is expanding significantly in Brazil with Microsoft launching its São Paulo Azure cloud region in 2014. The company also expanded to three availability zones in 2021. In 2024, Microsoft began work on more data centers in the Campinas area of São Paulo state.

In addition, Google launched a Brazilian cloud region in 2017, also located in São Paulo. Data Center Map currently lists 150 data centers in 25 markets in Brazil. However, several centers are still under development.

Amazon expands data centers globally

In the next decade, Amazon is planning to invest over $100 billion in new data centers globally. The company’s new investment strategy includes at least 216 data center buildings slated for completion over the next several years.

Most of Amazon’s data center investments are in the U.S., with $35 billion dedicated to various projects across the state of Virginia. Outside the U.S., Amazon is also expanding its data center footprint internationally with new projects in Brazil, the U.K., Taiwan, Singapore, and Germany since the beginning of the year.
