Tadweer Group, a leading environmental management company in Abu Dhabi, has partnered with Levidian, a U.K.-based climate technology firm, to collaborate on international waste decarbonisation projects. The two organisations have announced plans to develop a first-of-its-kind pilot project in Abu Dhabi, set to be commissioned by the end of 2024.
Oliver Christian, Her Majesty’s trade commissioner for the Middle East, stated that the announcement between the UK company Levidian and Tadweer Group clearly demonstrated their joint ambition to tackle one of the largest climate challenges facing the world today. He said that Tadweer Group’s commitment to the circular economy, coupled with Levidian’s climate tech innovation to decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors, would unlock unprecedented opportunities in waste-to-energy and waste-to-value, not just in the UAE but across the globe.
The companies share a common goal to explore decarbonisation projects of landfill sites worldwide through the deployment of Levidian’s LOOP technology. This innovative solution has the potential to produce millions of tonnes of clean hydrogen and carbon-negative graphene, which can be used as a high-quality additive to enhance the performance of materials such as concrete, batteries, and plastics.
For his part, Ali Al Dhaheri, managing director and CEO of Tadweer Group, the company is proud to invest in Levidian as a pioneer in the sustainability sector to bring LOOP technology to the UAE. He stated that Tadweer Group is committed to collaborating with like-minded organisations to harness advanced technologies and pioneer unprecedented solutions, challenging the way waste is viewed and handled for generations to come. Al Dhaheri expressed that Tadweer Group’s forward-thinking enables them to work with experts, including Levidian, to drive positive change and create a blueprint for merging world-class solutions with international collaboration.
Unlocking the value of waste
According to John Hartley, CEO of Levidian, countless studies have shown the scale of the challenge facing the waste sector in climate terms. He stated that together with Tadweer Group, Levidian’s mission is to help waste companies and governments on their decarbonisation journeys by unlocking the value of waste. Hartley further said this will drive down emissions and create a new revenue stream for businesses, meaning they no longer have to make the choice between planet and profit.
The mobile LOOP system developed as part of this partnership will be used to drive further decarbonisation projects in the UAE and beyond, with the aim of showcasing the technology as a scalable solution to the world’s waste methane problem.
Additionally, Levidian is set to join the global Waste to Zero initiative and will support the development of the sector’s pathway to decarbonisation.
